How to Choose a Wedding Photographer: 8 Questions Before You Sign

An Instagram portfolio still won't tell you how a photographer handles rain, a delayed ceremony, or a stressed-out family. 8 questions worth asking before you sign the contract.

A beautiful Instagram portfolio shows the ten best photos from ten weddings — not how a photographer handles stress, delays, or rain in the middle of the ceremony. These questions reveal more than any sample gallery.

Ask before you sign

1. How many weddings have you shot this year? The answer signals experience — and whether the photographer might be overbooked with another event on your exact wedding day (yes, it happens).

2. Who's actually shooting — you personally, or a team? Some studios send a different photographer than the one whose portfolio you saw. If a specific style matters to you, get it in writing in the contract.

3. How long until we get the finished photos? The usual range is 4 to 8 weeks. A faster turnaround for an extra fee exists; longer than three months is a red flag.

4. What happens with bad weather or a delayed schedule? An experienced photographer has a backup plan for outdoor shots in the rain and can shift timing flexibly without throwing off the rest of the schedule.

5. How many photos will we get, and in what format? Ask for a specific number (usually 400–800 edited photos for the full day) and whether you'll also get the RAW files or just the final selection.

6. Do you back up the data during and after the day? A professional shoots on two cards at once and backs up the data that same evening. If a photographer brushes off this question, take it as a warning.

7. What's included and what isn't? Travel, a second photographer, a drone, a wedding album — all of it should be itemised in the contract, not lumped into a vague "package."

8. How will we get the photos from guests that you don't catch? The photographer covers the ceremony, prep, and official moments — but not every table at once. Many couples set up a shared gallery for guests alongside their photographer, collecting phone photos from the whole evening without getting in the photographer's way.

In short

A contract that answers all eight questions is a sign of a professional. If a photographer hesitates or the answers are evasive, that tells you more than any portfolio.
